Hookipa Beach

On our trip to Maui we also visited one of the prime windsurfing spots in the world: Hookipa Beach. This is where the pros hang out and show their tricks to the cameras. The waves were about 7-8 feet, with occasional higher ones. Two helicopters were hovering between the surfing crowd to snap pictures. One of them was following a particular windsurfer as he sailed in and out of the waves, doing somersault whenever the waves were high enough. The winds were strong and gusty (20-30 knots) and I was impressed by the helicopter pilot's flying skills in these conditions, so close to the surfers. They went down to about 40 feet above the water.
The kids liked the beach as well, with all the waves crashing on the shore, so we spent some time playing in the sand and climbing rocks. Their game is to get close to the water and then run from the oncoming waves, screaming loudly. Kathelijne really loves this game. According to Eline you are only allowed to be touched by the water twice, but I could not find out what the penalty was for being touched the third time. I think you could start at zero again if that happened. The computer game concept of multiple lives is already present.
